Rex J. Moore is a Professional Practice Fellow in the Department of Oral Rehabilitation within the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand. He holds a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) from the University of Otago, awarded in 1972, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Dentistry (PGDipClinDent) from the same institution, completed with a focus on periodontics between 1992 and 1993. After graduating, Moore gained extensive clinical experience abroad, working in general dental practices across New South Wales, Queensland, and the Northern Territory in Australia, as well as in England. Upon returning to New Zealand, he established and maintained a general dental practice in Dunedin.
In 1999, Moore joined the University of Otago staff as a part-time clinician in the Department of Oral Rehabilitation, a role he continues to hold. The department, one of three in the Faculty of Dentistry, delivers teaching and research in prosthodontics, endodontics, biomaterials, clinical cariology, and dental technology, emphasizing the prevention and management of dental diseases, tooth restoration and replacement, and advanced biomechanical analysis of dental structures. Moore's professional interests encompass general dentistry, the management of gum diseases and associated periodontal surgery, cosmetic dentistry, and comprehensive denture services, aligning closely with departmental focuses. He has also contributed to the profession through leadership roles, serving as secretary and treasurer of the Otago branch of the New Zealand Dental Association for three years and acting as its president in 2010. His long-term commitment to clinical education at the university underscores his impact on training future dental professionals.
